I used a 1/2" dowel rod for the stick part with a 1/2" hole for the base. I got them at Hobby Lobby. You can find these on Amazon or other craft store sites. Be specific with the 1/2" when ordering.
I chose to cut these from 1/4” birch that are shown in the photo. Be sure you are aware birch has glue pockets and voids and may not always cut all the way through.
